It has now been a year since we launched the new and improved Yanmar ViO57-6, zero tail swing, tracked excavator.
It was clear to see how this machine would be an improvement on the previous models of ViO57 and this has been backed up by it's first year sales and overall feedback received.
In fact as I type this another batch are being unloaded from the factory.
When this model was first released we were interviewed by a popular construction magazine about the machine and how Yanmar had improved their -6 models. You can see this interview below which will give an insight into just some of the many features and benefits.

Q: What innovations does the machine feature to address environmental concerns?
The ViO57-6 benefits from an improved powerline: the combination of the new more powerful Yanmar engine and hydraulic pump, gives 14% more power and a new control valve improve the cycle-times by more than 10 %.
The 48.4 HP TNV engine is equipped with direct injection to create clean burning power. It has fully-electronic control to provide the ViO57-6 with total intelligent engine control. It is equipped with a turbo charger improving power, fuel efficiency and torque. This choice allows to reduce the rpm by 200 RPM and improves drastically the noise level for the operator and the bystanders.
The ViO57-6 is also equipped in standard with an Eco mode which effectively controls the motor speed, reducing it by 300 RPM, thus allowing a very low fuel consumption. The Auto-Idling device, also as standard, enables the engine to drop back to idle if the operator doesn’t touch the operating levers for 4 seconds. Environmental performance (noise and emissions) and fuel consumption are even more improved.
Q: As many operators spend their working day in the cab, how well is the driver catered for in terms of comfort and features inside the cab?
Inside the cab is an area that Yanmar have been putting plenty of work and improvements in. In the past year the 8 and 10 tonne machines have had an upgraded cab and now this is mirrored in the ViO57-6. Yanmar have called these developments the ‘Universal Design’ concept, which they state is focused on ergonomics such as door handles, handrails, wrist supports and control levers. Combined with increased leg room and work space, it improves the comfort and safety of the operator.
The air distribution and circulation in the cabin has been improved through the optimal location of six air conditioning vents. The defrost function ensures perfect demisting of the cabin. A fresh air / recirculation function has been added and both air filters are easily accessible. These changes improve greatly the operator’s comfort, especially in hot weather conditions.
On top of these the cab itself is mounted on specific vibration reducing mounts, not only does this reduce vibration levels but also the noise level inside the cab are lessened.
Numerous work positions are available and the operator can use the air suspension seat that is now standard to decide the best position for themselves. All of this increases comfort and in turn productivity.
Q: Are there any health and safety developments on this machine?
The all-around visibility has been drastically improved in the ViO57-6, leaving a minimal rear blind spot for the operator and enhancing the safety of workers around the machine. Each machine comes with three adjustable mirrors to aid visibility.
As with all cabbed Yanmar excavators the ViO57-6 has been designed to meet ROPS, FOPS and TOPS safety specifications. A further enhancement has been the addition of an LED working light to the boom. This LED technology provides a more powerful light whilst reducing energy consumption. When working at night or in poor light the operator will have a clearer view, with a wider angle of sight on what’s going on around the machine.
Q: In a highly competitive market, what sets the Yanmar brand apart from other global brands?
Being the inventor of the zero tail swing machines back in 1995, Yanmar pride themselves in creating the most compact and tightest turning zero tail swing excavators on the market.
Each excavator is fitted with a Yanmar engine, renowned for its low emission power output and reliability. On top of this, these machines come equipped with an innovative, powerful and progressive 3 Pump hydraulic system, known as VIPPS, fitted with; a variable-flow dual piston pump, a gear pump and a multiple combination directional control valve.
This technology is unique to the Yanmar brand, with the hydraulic circuitry design and load sensing pumps offering increased performance when utilising the boom, arm bucket and swing features. Key aspects to this improved performance include stability and lifting capacity.
As well as improved productivity and performance the VIPPS system offers users the ability to increase working speed, due to the cumulative capacity of the pumps, whilst also providing smooth and simultaneous operation of all the excavators’ features, even when travelling.
Q: What was the overall aim when you launched this new machine and when were they officially launched?
Simply put to be the most compact excavator in its class.
Officially launched at Bauma 2016, Yanmar see this machine as a true all-rounder, at home in tight urban areas as well as large open worksites. Improvements made to meet this criteria include the standard long arm boom still offering a dig depth of over 4 metres and 4420 mm dumping height. However the design has been re-modelled. The new design with a box structure has not only reduced the weight of the structure by 40kg but also increased lifting capacities by 10%. This design is more robust and durable too, decreasing likelihood of machine damages and downtime.
All cylinder tubes and rods still have the highest levels of protection thanks to a spring type steel plate covering them.
Q: What unique features on the new machine make it a good choice for an owner, operator, hire company or contractor?
As mentioned the new boom design will increase the lifting capacities and also the robustness of the machine, again falling in line with Yanmar’s goal of reducing the overall cost of ownership.
The more productive a machine is the greater the perceived value of it becomes. The following features will make it a popular choice for all manner of fleets:
Easy operation – the control levers are located for high movement precision. Two auxiliary hydraulic circuits are operated via a proportional control located on the joystick which adapt the flow and the direction of the oil flow. Additionally each circuit has an easy-to-operate potentiometer which adjusts the oil flow to the optimal requirement for each and every attachment.
Ease of maintenance – Five large opening hoods allow fast access for maintenance points, including daily checks or servicing.
Excellent Stability – a new X-frame undercarriage design not only increases stability, especially side stability, but also makes the undercarriage more durable and increases service life. This is thanks to all the components being upgraded compared to previous models.
